The III. International Meeting Against Homophobia organized by Kaos GL was held in Ankara between 12–19 May. The theme of this year’s meeting was “Human Rights and Discrimination”.
LGBT individuals participated in the III. International Meeting Against Homophobia between 12-19 May to discuss their issues and homophobia.
The free activities took place at Hacettepe University, Beytepe, Ankara University, Cebeci and Middle Eastern Technical University (METU) campuses on 13-14-15 May and Ekin Art Centre between 16-19 May.
LGBT individuals, organizations and associations, women organization representatives, legal experts, academicians, journalists, artists, writers, NGO representatives and politicians from both Turkey and foreign countries met at the events. As Initiative Against Homophobia, we also attended the III. International Meeting Against Homophobia with a representative committee.
Many national and international speakers talked at the Meeting. United Nations Member of Parliament Michael Cashman, legal expert Mithat Sancar, UN Violence Against Women Special Rapporteur Yakın Ertürk, Former ILGA General Secretary Kürşad Kahramanoğlu, journalist Oral Çalışlar, KA-DER Chairperson Hülya Gülbahar, European Commission Turkey Delegation Counsellor Diego Mellado and journalist Murat Çelikkan were a few of the speakers.
One of the most anticipated guests of the Meeting was Dutch writer Anja Meulenbelt. Meulenbelt, who is known for her books such as “The Shame is Over”, “Die Gewöhnung ans alltägliche Glück” and “De Hewondering”, is considered as one of the most significant names of the feminist movement.
The presentations of writer/poet Murathan Mungan and Radical newspapers journalist Yildirim Turker were also exciting highlights of the Meeting.
A walk was also held within the scope of III. International Meeting Against Homophobia. The walk began in front of the Human Rights Monument at Yuksel Street and ended at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
LGBT individuals from all around Turkey and the world met at Yuksel Street on 17 May at 10:00 and walked to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. A press release was made following the walk.
