“Speak the Unspoken: Conference on LGBTI Equality and Countering Discrimination in Cyprus”

(Nicosia, 19/10/2017) “Speak The Unspoken: Conference On LGBTI Equality And Countering Discrimination in Cyprus” organized within the framework of “Unspoken: Creating Dialogue on LGBTI Rights in the Turkish Cypriot Community” project is taking place on 20th and 21st of October at Bedesten, Nicosia.

The EU-funded project “Unspoken: Creating Dialogue on LGBTI Rights in the Turkish Cypriot Community” implemented by Cyprus Community Media Centre – CCMC in cooperation with Queer Cyprus Association and the Thomson Foundation, aims to achieve social change by combating discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation and improving levels of media coverage and public debate.

The 2-day “Speak the Unspoken: Conference On LGBTI Equality And Countering Discrimination in Cyprus” which will be organised under the Unspoken Project, which leaves almost two years behind, includes thematic panel discussions on media, health, education, feminism and queer theory and LGBTI rights activism/mobilizing an LGBTI rights movement. In addition, the survey results on the attitudes of Turkish Cypriot community towards LGBTI people, along with findings from other work carried out within the scope of the project will be revealed.

The conference features Turkish and Greek speaking Cypriot activists and experts from Cyprus, and speakers from Turkey, Lebanon, United Kingdom and Malta.

The conference aims to bring LGBTI issues to light, provide a setting for dialogue and contribute to countering discrimination in Cyprus. In addition, the conference aims to provide a platform for discussions and exchange of information in a wide range of social and academic aspects.

There is no participation fee for the conference and there will be Turkish- English interpretation. Participants who attend both days of the conference will be given a certificate of attendance.
