We Congratulate Member of European Parliament Niyazi Kızılyürek Who Signed LGBTI + Friendly Candidate Pledge

The 2019 European Parliament elections were held an increasingly polarized social and political climate last week.   Unfortunately, Parliament elections resulted with the rise of the right wing. The very core values and standards upon which the EU was founded – respect for human dignity and human rights, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law – are being called into question and human rights, in particular, the human rights of LGBTI+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Intersex, and Plus) people, going to face with a forceful challenge.

   
On the other hand, upon all these incidents, Queer Cyprus Association’s call to candidates to sign the LGBTI + Friendly Candidate Pledge was answered by our founding member of our Association and candidate from AKEL “Niyazi Kizilyurek”. His winning on  European Parliament election started new seeds of hope in terms of peace, cooperation and human rights in Cyprus and the European Union. We congratulate a founding member of our Association on his future works at the European Union Parliament. In his duty on the office, we will be following his commitment to pledge.  In this way, we look forward to opening our offers to do a collaboration with Niyazi Kizilyurek and spread our voice on LGBTI+ struggle to the European Union Parliament.

Queer Cyprus Association (QCA), under ILGA Europe, carried out a campaign asking candidates to sign the pledge to stand up for the human rights and equality for all LGBTI+ people in the European Union and beyond and will do so by working to:

  1. Strengthen protection in EU law and policy,
  2. Ensure an enabling environment for LGBTI+ human rights defenders,
  3. Be an ally to underrepresented voices,
  4. Ensure EU leadership on LGBTI+ rights, and
  5. Harnessing the power of their position to advance the human rights of LGBTI+’s
