20 November Transgender Day of Remembrance Event Description
On November 20, 1998, Rita Hester was stabbed 20 times by assailants in a transphobic attack and died. Since 1999, trans people who are victims of hate crimes have been commemorated in memory of Rita Hester as the “Remembrance Day for Transgender Victims of Hate Crime”.
Prejudices and discriminations against the trans community also continue in Northern Cyprus as well. The social pressure that trans people are exposed to is increasing day by day, and the decision-makers remain silent and ignore this issue. On the Trans Day of Remembrance, as Queer Cyprus Association, we would like to draw attention to the crucial problems trans people face and their demands. For this reason, we invite everyone to the online event that we will organize via Zoom on Sunday, November 20 at 19:00. The event aims to share the experiences of transgender subjects and to talk about the problems experienced together.
Don’t forget to register for the event.
