Same-sex Marriage Legalized in Greece!

Greece took a historic step by legalizing same-sex marriage on February 15, 2024.

A historic moment took place in Athens on February 15, 2024! Greece took a historic step by legalizing same-sex marriage, thus granting all individuals in society the right to equality in marriage. The law, which was passed by a vote of 176 in the 300-seat parliament, grants same-sex couples the right to marry and adopt children.

The passage of the bill marks a major milestone in the movement for LGBTI+ rights in Greece. After years of struggle and advocacy, same-sex couples will now have the same rights as heterosexual couples. Greece becomes the first Orthodox Christian country to allow same-sex marriage and the 37th country in the world to legalize marriage equality.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a statement after the bill was passed, “Today is a historic day for Greece. The new law will courageously eliminate a serious inequality.”

Some key points of the bill include:

  • Same-sex couples will have the right to marry in the same way as heterosexual couples.
  • Same-sex couples will be able to adopt children.
  • Same-sex couples will be able to enjoy all legal rights related to marriage and family.

As the Queer Cyprus Association, we sincerely hope for swift steps to be taken towards the legalisation of marriage for same-sex couples, which is one of the most fundamental human rights, to include LGBTI+s on the island, and for marriage equality to be recognized for everyone.
